Program Update: Health & PE with Terra

For PE/Health, we've started doing our health units across the different grades.  This year, I've decided to scatter a few PE days in between some of the health days so that the students don't have to sit for too long over multiple days. The health topics that are covered this semester per grade are as follows:

6th Grade (Personal Health)
  • Nutrition (eat your veggies!!); watched documentary by Joe Cross, "Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead."
  • Sugar and how too much isn't good for you; sources of sugar, etc.
  • Anger management ("I" message, calming techniques)
  • Elements of fitness (muscle strength, muscle endurance, cardiorespiratory endurance, flexibility, and body composition)
  • Muscle anatomy
  • Heart rate
  • F.L.A.S.H. (reproductive anatomy and puberty)
7th Grade (Social Health)
  • Peer pressure
  • Addiction series (cell phones, nicotine, alcohol, illicit drugs)
  • Kindness
  • Eating disorders
  • F.L.A.S.H. (reproductive health)
8th Grade (Community Health/Leadership)
  • Gun violence
  • Recycling - is it worth it?
  • Homelessness
  • Health care
  • PSA monologue joint project with Drama.
  • F.L.A.S.H. (reproductive health)
For PE, the remaining units we will cover are the circus units, badminton, speedminton, pickleball and disc games.  We just started doing the circus unit in between the health days.
