Step Right Up! A Look Into Our P.E. Circus Unit
by Terra Yara, EW Athletic Director
We just wrapped up our Circus unit in PE, and it’s always one of my favorites to teach. While it looks like a lot of fun and games, there is some serious "brain work" happening behind the scenes!
Why I Love the Circus Unit:
- Brain Power: Circus skills require intense hand-eye coordination that strengthens cross-brain synapses, directly aiding in cognitive development.
- The Power of "Failing": To successfully juggle three balls, you have to drop them. A lot! I host a "Failing Showcase" each day where I (and the students) demonstrate a skill we’re struggling with. It’s a great way to show that success isn't about being perfect; it's about picking up the pieces and trying again.
- Sport Readiness: These skills are incredible for eye-tracking. Many pro athletes, like tennis players, use juggling or ball-tossing drills to warm up their focus before a big match.
What We Practiced:
The students explored everything from spinning plates and flower sticks to ripsticks and tumbling. We even worked on knot-roping (tying a knot with one hand!) and kendama.
The Fan Favorite:
The Diablo (Chinese Yoyo) was the undisputed star of the show! It was so popular that many students were asking parents to purchase their own to practice at home. Who knows? We might have a future Cirque du Soleil star in our midst!
