The covers of the books are made with faux rice paper made from crushed paper painted with watercolors, then embellished with a yarn and bead closure.

The element of color is celebrated in a student favorite: The color wheel pass-the-paint game. Paints are arranged around the tables in a color wheel (red, orange, yellow, etc.). Each color is used for several minutes and then passed to the next person. Eventually, the entire color wheel has turned, resulting in bright, colorful, abstract paintings.

7th Grade Modern Art

First, students viewed a survey of the history of flowers in art, including the iconic works of Georgia O'Keeffe. Big flowers were drawn onto watercolor paper; a rubber cement resist was applied on the pencil lines; various watercolor painting techniques were employed; and when dry, the resist was removed. Here are some works in progress. Gorgeous!

Modern Abstract Painting was up next. Using a variety of painting techniques and using tape to mask lines and shapes, all sorts of amazing compositions were created layer by layer.

Surrealism is a popular 7th grade art genre. Using images cut out of magazines, students arranged these elements to create works of art showing the juxtaposition of items (placing things together that don’t necessarily go together), scale (combining things with different sizes) and transformation (one thing morphing into another). These elements are the cornerstones of Surrealistic Art.

8th Grade: Altered Books!

Each student is working on their own art adventure, everyday. It could be painting, collageing, sewing, mixed media, spray painting, sawing, molding air-dry clay, melting crayons … the list is as open ended as the imagination. Deconstructuring old laptops is a current favorite. The altered book storage shelves are getting very full.
