Building a Strong Foundation

At Explorer West, we create graduates who are numerate, confident young adults with a strong foundation of mathematical reasoning and knowledge.

In high school, EW students enter advanced math classes at nearly twice the rate of their peers from other schools.

Explorer West students do not simply find answers to problems. They learn how to explain their processes, both verbally and in writing. They confidently engage new ideas, experimenting with possible strategies and generating next steps to try, even when they cannot picture the entire path to a definitive solution.

Lessons are concise, allowing time in each class session for student exploration of new concepts. Workgroups change frequently, providing opportunities for students to work collaboratively with many different classmates throughout the year. Students who need extra support benefit from small group instruction and peer tutoring, while those with the highest readiness levels will find a challenge.

Math studies include hands-on projects and cross-curricular exploration.

The school culture of respect at Explorer West affords students a safe space to agree or disagree respectfully while testing ideas. Students are challenged and supported on an individual level, and are empowered to teach and learn from one another.

We loved the fact that the school focuses beyond typical “teach to the test” and really focuses on applicable-to-real-life education. One of our favorite things about this school that stood out was the importance for students to try everything.
