Program Update: Art with Sarah

The art department was excited to share one of Seattle’s cultural treasures with the 6th grade during our recent field trip. We visited the Olympic Sculpture Park located on the iconic Elliott Bay waterfront.  The morning was spent on an informative walking tour of the International District - plenty of public art to be seen there as well. At the sculpture park, students walked among sculptures large and small including this humongous Richard Serra Cor-10 steel work that alluded to the large cargo ship hulls on the water nearby.

Back in the classroom, we are about half way through our 650 pounds of clay. The 6th graders are creating ancient structures, pagodas, temples, castles, and imaginary dwellings. Lucille and Eliana are putting the finishing touches on theirs. The 7th grade have completed coil pots, masks, and are now constructing boxes with lids. They also spent a fun choice day constructing items large and small out of cardboard, including this throne by Ben W. and Harry. The 8th grade is celebrating food; here is Theo with a spectacular three-tiered cake.
