After two years of not being able to do this classic 8th-grade project, we were able to create masks in art! Using pre-plastered gauze strips (the same product used on medical casts) faces were first prepared with plastic wrap and petroleum jelly and then covered in plaster gauze to create a perfect likeness of each student. Working in groups of three, there was a "doctor" who applied the plaster, a "nurse" who handed the strips to the "doctor," and the "patient" who was well taken care of during the process, which took about 20 - 30 minutes. The activity required a great deal of trust in one's team. These masks will be painted and decorated in a variety of ways depending on each student's imagination.
