Explorer West Social Studies Teacher Tim Owens, has been honored as one of the top six Washington State Civic Educators for 2018. In classrooms and community organizations around Washington, civic educators are at work laying the foundations for engaged citizens.
The Washington State Legislature chooses top civic educators annually.
Tim Owens’ dedication to civic education is evident in the many projects he introduces to his students. His Change The World Project for our 8th graders is a powerful exercise in civic duty. The students learn from the hands-on experience: researching social issues, writing essays, canvassing the public and contacting elected officials.
“The most rewarding part of being a civic educator is knowing that my students are aware of the power of their voice and are set to become active participants in our democracy,” said Tim. “The fact that my students know more about our Constitution than many adults is also a great source of pride. I know that my students will go on to do amazing things with their lives, and having the critical background of civics will make them informed citizens.”
Congratulations, Tim. Well done.
