Endowment

In the last two years, Explorer West Middle School has received some incredibly generous gifts from supporters who believe in our mission and decided to establish scholarship and endowment funds to enhance the school’s commitment to diversity and give more kids an opportunity to attend Explorer West. In 2010-2011, over $180,000 in financial aid was awarded, providing 24% of our students with financial support.

  • The Benita Mooney Fund received another $100,000 in December 2010, for a total contribution $325,000 from this generous donor.  The first awards have been made to students joining Explorer West Middle School in Fall 2011.
  • Rinku and Dwight Wheaton established The Tomorrow’s Leaders Scholarship Endowment
in 2011. Moved by the strong diversity emphasis of the school’s mission, the Wheatons created the endowment to provide “needs-based” scholarships to Rainier Scholars and students of color. The quasi-endowment was kicked off with a $10,000 donation from Cairncross & Hempelmann. As a result of the Wheatons’ drive and perseverance, the Explorer West Middle School experience will be accessible to a more diverse population of students. Every dollar donated is vital to the operation of the school and to its ability to offer financial aid to eligible families. Please contact Evan Hundley for more information about how to get involved in supporting these important endowments.
