Community Outreach – 2 Ways To Get Involved

In the next couple of weeks, there are two amazing opportunities to donate needed items to local organizations.  EW students are passionate about serving their community.

Clothing and Supply Drive for Teen Feed

An eighth grader at Explorer West has been volunteering with an organization called Teen Feed by serving Sunday dinner to homeless teens and is asking for families to get involved in a drive.

Teen Feed, started in 1987, serves 40-70 guests 365 days a year. They give them a hot meal, listen to them in a non-judgmental way, and build a relationship with each youth to learn what types of resources will help them best.  But until they find permanent homes, helping the teens stay warm, dry, and clean is an enormous challenge. Shelters are few and often unsafe for kids. There are no public restrooms, or showers for kids with no money or who look homeless.

One of the ways you can help is to donate some of the things you may already have around your house.  The supplies most needed by Teen Feed are travel size toiletries (first aid kits, toothpaste, razors, dental floss, combs/brushes, hand sanitizer, shampoo, conditioner, lotion) and warm clothing (socks, hoodies, gloves, hats/beanies, underwear – mens & womens).  You can make donations in the boxes (one for toiletries and one for clothing) at each end of the school. On each box you’ll find tear sheets with a list of items the teens need. Please make any donations by Wednesday, December 12.

Please visit the Teen Feed website to learn more about the organization. Thank you in advance for making the lives of homeless teens better!

Winter Coat Drive to Benefit Westside Baby

Do you have a child’s coat (size NB- age 12) that you are ready to donate?  The students in Britt’s advisory will be collecting gently used (or new) winter coats until Wednesday December 12th.  Students can deposit donations in the colorful bins near the entrance.  All items will be donated to Westside Baby and will be used to help children in the West Seattle/ South Seattle communities.  Westside Baby provides essential items to local children in need by collecting and distributing diapers, clothing, toys and equipment.  Since opening in 2001, they have distributed over $8.5 million worth of clothing, toys, baby gear, and other items.

Westside Baby is always looking for children’s supplies (diapers, car seats, clothing, strollers, etc). Please check their website to find their wishlist or donation locations and times for those other items.

Please help support  Teen Feed and Westside Baby by donating by Wednesday, December 12!  Thanks for your donations!
